Verse 13 is found in chapter 15 of 2 Samuel. David receives news that the hearts of Israel have turned toward Absalom and decides to flee Jerusalem to prevent the city from being attacked. The king’s departure is presented with grief, especially because he leaves behind the capital he had established. The foreigners and loyal soldiers accompanying him show that loyalty to David does not depend solely on tribal ties. The king accepts leaving the city in order to reduce the destruction that could result from war within Jerusalem.
