Verse 4 is found in chapter 18 of 2 Samuel. David organizes his forces and, although he wants to go into battle, his men ask him to remain in the city. Before the battle he explicitly orders them to deal gently with Absalom. David’s army achieves a decisive victory in the forest of Ephraim. The text attributes an important role in Absalom’s forces’ defeat to the terrain. The political battle ultimately becomes a family tragedy for David.
