And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.

Verse 9 is found in chapter 18 of 2 Samuel. Absalom becomes caught by the head in the branches of an oak tree while his mule continues onward. A soldier refuses to kill him because he remembers David’s command, but Joab eventually strikes him and orders his burial. The monument Absalom had erected for himself contrasts with his burial in a pit covered with stones. The scene shows the reversal of his ambitions: the one who sought to establish a royal name ends without the throne he pursued.
