Verse 7 is found in chapter 19 of 2 Samuel. David’s mourning threatens to turn victory into shame for his own followers. Joab rebukes him, arguing that by publicly mourning Absalom he makes the soldiers who saved his life appear to have acted wrongly. David accepts the advice and sits publicly at the gate. The scene shows the tension between the father’s private grief and the king’s public responsibilities. David must resume leadership even though he remains emotionally broken.
