Verse 26 is found in chapter 2 of 2 Samuel. The pursuit ends when Abner and Joab speak and agree to stop the fighting. Although David’s army gains the advantage, the outcome is deeply tragic: Asahel and many men have died. Asahel’s burial in Bethlehem brings attention back to the family dimension of war. The section shows that David is advancing toward the throne while Israel remains divided and the military power of his own allies can become a source of conflict.
