Verse 4 is found in chapter 2 of 2 Samuel. After Saul’s death, David does not immediately move against his former rivals, but consults the Lord about where he should settle. God directs him to Hebron, where he is anointed king over Judah. The action shows that his rise occurs progressively and under divine direction. David also honors the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead for burying Saul, publicly reinforcing that he does not regard the former king’s death as a personal victory to be celebrated.
