When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them. And Joab's garment that he had put on was girded unto him, and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out.

Verse 8 is found in chapter 20 of 2 Samuel. David orders Amasa to gather the men of Judah, but the delay leads the king to turn to Abishai and Joab. When Amasa meets them, Joab murders him under the appearance of friendship. Joab’s violence again interferes with the king’s decisions. David attempts to control another political crisis, but his dependence on commanders capable of acting violently continues to weaken the moral authority of his government.
