Verse 16 is found in chapter 24 of 2 Samuel. David acknowledges his sin and asks the Lord to remove his guilt. Gad presents him with three options of judgment, and David chooses to fall into the hands of the Lord because he trusts in his mercy. The plague causes many deaths, and David intercedes for it to stop, acknowledging that he and his house are responsible. The scene shows the king identifying with his people and accepting responsibility for the harm caused by his decision.
