And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

Verse 21 is found in chapter 3 of 2 Samuel. Abner offers to transfer Israel’s allegiance to David and negotiates the restoration of Michal, Saul’s daughter and David’s former wife. David accepts, and Abner persuades the elders of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin to recognize him. The unity of the kingdom begins to be built through political agreements, but the narrative reminds us that the transition is surrounded by personal interests, old alliances, and family wounds. David receives Abner without using force to obtain the crown.
