Verse 23 is found in chapter 3 of 2 Samuel. Joab murders Abner after Abner has been peacefully received by David. The king publicly rejects responsibility for the crime, mourns Abner, and compels Joab and the people to participate in the mourning. David attempts to separate his government from the private violence of his commander. Abner’s death also reveals a recurring problem in David’s reign: his political decisions can be compromised by the independent actions of powerful men within his circle.
