Verse 7 is found in chapter 4 of 2 Samuel. Abner’s death causes fear in Ish-bosheth and throughout Israel. Two men from the tribe of Benjamin, Rechab and Baanah, murder Saul’s son while he sleeps and bring his head to David. They believe eliminating the rival will be good news for the new king, but their action repeats precisely the kind of opportunistic violence David has previously rejected. The narrative prepares David’s response to those who attempt to advance his reign through murder.
