Verse 17 is found in chapter 5 of 2 Samuel. The Philistines react to David’s establishment as king over all Israel and come up to seek him. David consults the Lord before fighting and receives victory at Baal-perazim. His interpretation of the triumph is theological: he recognizes that God has broken through his enemies before him. The idols abandoned by the Philistines become a sign of the defeat of their gods before the God of Israel.
