In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.

Verse 1 is found in chapter 10 of Daniel. In the third year of Cyrus, Daniel receives another revelation concerning a great conflict. His period of fasting and mourning shows that the revelation comes after prolonged spiritual preparation. The language of conflict connects this vision with the political tensions described in chapters 11 and 12, while also preparing the reader for a heavenly dimension behind visible events.
