Verse 19 is found in chapter 15 of Deuteronomy. The firstborn of livestock are consecrated to the Lord and must not be used for ordinary labor or shorn in the usual way. An animal without defect may be eaten before the Lord, while a defective one cannot be offered as a sacrifice. The legislation distinguishes everyday use from cultic dedication, preserving the integrity of what belongs to God.
