At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.

Verse 15 is found in chapter 24 of Deuteronomy. A creditor must not enter a debtor’s house to take a pledge, and certain garments must be returned before nightfall. Withholding a laborer’s wages is also prohibited, and part of the harvest must be left for foreigners, orphans, and widows. Economic legislation seeks to limit the creditor’s power and turn the memory of slavery in Egypt into a foundation for solidarity.
