Verse 16 is found in chapter 26 of Deuteronomy. Moses presents the covenant relationship between God and Israel as a mutual belonging: Israel declares the Lord to be its God, and God declares Israel to be his treasured people. Election implies obedience, while identity as the chosen people requires living according to the commandments. The section summarizes much of the covenant theology developed in the preceding speeches.
