Verse 3 is found in chapter 6 of Deuteronomy. The great commandment calls Israel to love the Lord with all its heart, soul, and strength. The law is not reduced to an external set of rules: it must occupy memory, family conversation, and daily life. The Shema combines theological confession with daily practice, commanding that Israel’s identity as the people of the one God determine its entire existence.
