Verse 1 is found in chapter 7 of Deuteronomy. Israel receives instructions to destroy the worship sites and practices of the Canaanite nations and avoid alliances that could lead to idolatry. Religious separation is not based on a supposed moral superiority of Israel, but on election and covenant purpose. The text insists that Israel’s obedience must preserve its identity as a people consecrated to the Lord.
