Verse 2 is found in chapter 8 of Deuteronomy. Moses interprets the forty years in the wilderness as a period of testing and formation. Hunger, manna, and daily dependence taught Israel that life is sustained not only by food but by the word of God. Entering a fertile land must not cause Israel to forget the lessons learned during scarcity.
