For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

Verse 21 is found in chapter 2 of Ecclesiastes. The comparison between wisdom and folly recognizes a real advantage of wisdom: it enables a person to live with greater discernment. However, both the wise and the fool ultimately face death and may leave their possessions to someone else. This limitation causes Qohelet frustration. The conclusion introduces a decisive theme of the book: eating, drinking, and enjoying the fruit of one’s labor can be received as a gift from God, but not as a human achievement capable of overcoming mortality.
