Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

Verse 11 is found in chapter 6 of Ecclesiastes. All human labor seems directed toward satisfying appetite, yet appetite is never completely satisfied. Qohelet again asks what advantage the wise person has over the fool if both remain limited by the same conditions of life. The comparison with a shadow reinforces human transience. People know little about what will happen after death and therefore cannot control the ultimate meaning of their efforts.
