All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

Verse 15 is found in chapter 7 of Ecclesiastes. Qohelet avoids two extremes: attempting to be perfectly righteous through self-sufficient confidence in one’s own righteousness and giving oneself over to wickedness as though consequences were irrelevant. The section recognizes that the righteous may die prematurely and that human conduct does not always produce immediately proportional results. It also warns that no one exists who never sins, so nobody can present themselves as morally flawless.
