Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

Verse 17 is found in chapter 8 of Ecclesiastes. Qohelet observes an apparent moral contradiction: wicked people may receive honors and be buried with respect, while righteousness does not always receive immediate reward. The delay of judgment may encourage some to persist in evil. Nevertheless, the author maintains that ultimately there will be a distinction between those who fear God and those who do not. God’s work remains partly inaccessible to human understanding.
