Verse 12 is found in chapter 3 of Ezra. The reaction to the foundations is twofold. Many older people who had seen the first temple weep, while others shout for joy. The scene simultaneously acknowledges memory and hope. Restoration does not erase the losses of the past: the new beginning is accompanied by the memory of what Jerusalem had been before its destruction.
