Verse 1 is found in chapter 7 of Ezra. Many years later Ezra appears, identified as a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses and descended from a priestly line reaching back to Aaron. The genealogy legitimizes his role within Israel. His authority is presented primarily not as political power, but as competence to know, teach, and apply God’s Law within the restored community.
