Verse 12 is found in chapter 9 of Ezra. The prayer acknowledges that the people have again violated commands concerning the peoples of the land. Ezra recalls the reason for these instructions: Israel was to preserve a set-apart identity so as not to abandon God’s commandments. The central concern is not an isolated ethnic issue, but the threat that the community might again adopt religious practices incompatible with its covenant.
