Verse 4 is found in chapter 9 of Ezra. The leaders inform Ezra that some of the people, including priests and Levites, have mixed with the peoples of the lands and entered marriages that compromise the separation required by the Law. Ezra responds by tearing his garments and gathering with those who tremble at God’s words. The crisis is presented as a threat to the identity of the restored people.
