Verse 4 is found in chapter 1 of Hosea. The birth of the first son is given the name Jezreel, associated with the valley and with bloody events in Israel’s history. The name functions as a prophetic sign against the house of Jehu and announces that Israel’s military power is not a guarantee of security. God declares that he will break Israel’s bow, using a symbol of military strength to announce its weakening.
