Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

The verse 5 is found in chapter 58 of Isaiah. The fasting God accepts consists not merely of outward affliction, but of freeing the oppressed, sharing bread, and caring for the needy. Isaiah dismantles a false separation between worship and social justice. When the people practice mercy, light, restoration, and God’s presence are described as consequences of authentic worship.
