The verse 17 is found in chapter 1 of Jeremiah. The two initial visions, the almond branch and the boiling pot, function as signs of divine vigilance and judgment coming from the north. Jeremiah must announce calamity against Judah because of its idolatry, but he receives the promise that God will make him like a fortified city. The prophetic calling includes opposition, but also the assurance of divine presence.
