The verse 23 is found in chapter 18 of Jeremiah. The people respond to the message by conspiring against Jeremiah and declaring that they will not abandon their own customs. The prophet contrasts this conduct with the unusualness of a nation abandoning its god. The final prayer is a severe lament over the persecution suffered by one who had interceded for them.
