The verse 3 is found in chapter 37 of Jeremiah. Zedekiah asks Jeremiah to pray when the Egyptian army temporarily causes the Babylonians to withdraw. The prophet warns that the withdrawal does not mean permanent defeat: the Babylonians will return and burn Jerusalem. The episode shows how immediate political circumstances can create false hopes when interpreted without God’s word.
