The verse 14 is found in chapter 40 of Jeremiah. Johanan informs Gedaliah of Ishmael’s conspiracy and asks permission to eliminate him preventively. Gedaliah refuses to believe that the danger is real. His decision reveals the fragility of leadership after Jerusalem’s fall and prepares the assassination that will trigger further consequences.
