In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.

The verse 20 is found in chapter 50 of Jeremiah. Babylon, the instrument previously used to discipline Judah, now receives a lengthy oracle of judgment. Israel and Judah will be sought and will return together to Zion, while Babylon’s sins lead to its downfall. The reversal is central: the empire that appeared permanent becomes an object of judgment.
