For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain.

The verse 9 is found in chapter 50 of Jeremiah. Babylon, the instrument previously used to discipline Judah, now receives a lengthy oracle of judgment. Israel and Judah will be sought and will return together to Zion, while Babylon’s sins lead to its downfall. The reversal is central: the empire that appeared permanent becomes an object of judgment.
