Verse 3 is found in chapter 10 of Joshua. Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, fears the alliance between Gibeon and Israel and gathers other Amorite kings to attack the city. The Gibeonites ask Joshua for help, and God assures him that he need not fear because the enemies have been delivered into his hands. Israel’s response shows that the accidental covenant with Gibeon creates a new military obligation. The episode prepares one of the book’s most important campaigns and expands the conquest southward.
