For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Verse 20 is found in chapter 11 of Joshua. The narrator summarizes the conquest of the region and states that Joshua took all that land according to what God had said to Moses. The war lasts a long time, and the Anakites are removed from several regions, although some remain in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. Finally the land rests from war. This conclusion shows that the conquest was not instantaneous, but a prolonged process whose result is presented as the progressive fulfillment of the promise.
