Verse 3 is found in chapter 16 of Joshua. The inheritance of the descendants of Joseph begins with Ephraim and Manasseh. General boundaries are described across places of geographical and political importance. The allotment formula shows continuity with the procedure used for the other tribes. The land is presented as an inheritance received within an ordered tribal structure, rather than as territory acquired solely through individual military initiative.
