Verse 13 is found in chapter 17 of Joshua. The boundaries of Manasseh are described along with the cities it receives. However, the inhabitants of several towns are not completely expelled. The Israelites subject some of them to forced labor. The passage again shows the difference between territorial assignment and full occupation. The continued presence of Canaanite populations within tribal territories anticipates religious and social difficulties that will appear in Israel’s later history.
