Verse 6 is found in chapter 21 of Joshua. The Levites request cities in which to live because they do not receive their own tribal region. Through the casting of lots, cities are assigned from the various tribes. This distribution materializes the earlier statement that the Lord is Levi’s inheritance while also ensuring that Levites are present throughout Israel. Their territorial dispersion supports their role in the nation’s worship and communal life.
