Verse 27 is found in chapter 22 of Joshua. The eastern tribes explain that the altar was not built for sacrifices, but as a witness that they belong to the same people and worship the same God. They feared that future generations might regard the Jordan as a religious boundary and exclude their descendants from worship. The clarification transforms an apparent rebellion into a concern for preserving the memory of unity among geographically separated tribes.
