God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.

Verse 29 is found in chapter 22 of Joshua. The eastern tribes explain that the altar was not built for sacrifices, but as a witness that they belong to the same people and worship the same God. They feared that future generations might regard the Jordan as a religious boundary and exclude their descendants from worship. The clarification transforms an apparent rebellion into a concern for preserving the memory of unity among geographically separated tribes.
