Verse 27 is found in chapter 24 of Joshua. Joshua establishes the covenant with the people at Shechem and writes these words in the book of the law of God. He also sets up a large stone as a witness, because the stone has heard the words spoken. The physical memorial gives material form to the verbal commitment and allows later generations to remember the decision. The covenant is thus associated with writing, communal testimony, and visible memory.
