Verse 4 is found in chapter 24 of Joshua. Joshua gathers all the tribes at Shechem and begins a historical speech tracing Israel’s journey from Terah and Abraham to the deliverance from Egypt. The history is repeatedly told from the perspective of God’s actions: He called, multiplied, protected, sent plagues, and brought the people out. Israel’s identity is therefore grounded in a history of divine grace rather than in its own achievements.
