Verse 1 is found in chapter 3 of Joshua. Israel leaves Shittim and arrives at the Jordan, where the ark of the covenant occupies the center of the instructions. The priests carrying it must go ahead of the people, symbolically emphasizing that God’s presence precedes the army. The command to consecrate themselves prepares the people for an extraordinary divine intervention. The crossing of the Jordan will be presented as a new manifestation of God’s power comparable, in its narrative function, to the crossing of the sea during the exodus.
