Verse 14 is found in chapter 7 of Joshua. Joshua intercedes, asking why God allowed the defeat, and the divine response identifies the cause: Israel has sinned by taking objects devoted to destruction. The solution is not first a new military strategy, but restoration of covenant faithfulness. The procedure for identifying the guilty party eventually leads to Achan. The narrative emphasizes that Israel’s problem is not the supposed superiority of the enemy, but the breach of obedience required by God.
