Verse 11 is found in chapter 8 of Joshua. Joshua approaches Ai and draws out its defenders. The men of the city believe Israel is fleeing as in the first battle and leave the protection of their walls. The episode shows how the memory of the previous defeat is used by Israel within a military deception strategy. Ai’s confidence in its earlier success ultimately becomes a vulnerability that allows Israel to execute the ambush.
