They present themselves as travelers from a distant land and use old bread, worn wineskins, and deteriorated clothing to support their deception. Israel is deceived by appearances and does not consult the Lord before making the agreement. The episode introduces a narrative warning about the need to seek divine guidance even when a decision appears reasonable from a human perspective.
