Verse 2 is found in chapter 15 of Judges. Samson returns to visit his wife and discovers that she has been given to another man. In response, he captures three hundred foxes, ties them together, and sets their tails on fire, destroying Philistine crops. The action intensifies the conflict and shows how a personal offense against Samson produces collective consequences. The judge who should deliver Israel begins by acting from private revenge.
