Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.

Verse 22 is found in chapter 19 of Judges. The men of Gibeah surround the house and demand to abuse the visitor. The violence results in the death of the concubine, whose body is later divided and sent throughout the tribes of Israel. The account describes one of the darkest scenes in the book without presenting the attackers’ behavior as a model. The horror of Gibeah provokes a national crisis and forces Israel to confront the seriousness of its own internal corruption.
